I will do my best to help you.There is some good advice in most of the above posts. I work with a financial services company that has an aspect of MLM, One of the key elements of achieveing success is belief system. What matters is your understanding in terms of what you are doing. I cannot stress this enough, It does not matter what other people think of you doing MLM. These people don't pay your bills, you do.
So many people "hear" that mlm is bad and will give advice based on the generalizations that they think they know. Most people don't realize where wealthy people come from,98% of them do not come from working a job as an employee. Also entertainers, sports figures and loto winners only make up a sliver of people that are wealthy. The rest of them own a business or a business system that lets their efforts compound and duplicate. as long as the product or service you offer does provide a benefit also there is an actual need for the product and the company you are with offers a level playing field to all that come into the business, then you stand justified.
This is gonna sound strange but, "Work on your head". meaning work on replacing all negative thought prossess and replacing it with reading motivational books, listning to motivational speakers. Remember your biz is won or lost between your ears.
Another good point is to raise your belief system in terms of what your time is worth.See your time as being very valuable. That will motivate you till no end. I personally know people in this company that make $120.000 not a year but a month, the reason ? This is what they believe their time is worth. The opposite also holds true, if someone is making $8.00 an hour that is because of what their belief system dictates.
Lastly, prepare to fail many times and have many false starts. A question? What is the opposite of success? Wrong.... not failure.
You see people that have won or found success in life have failed many times before they won. The answer is settling,if people do not succeed they settle back to what they were originaly doing. people that win embrace failing as part of the prosess of winning. I hope this helps. By the way this advice is not just for mlm. This is about a transition from an employee mind set to a business building mind set regardless if you are going into an already established business system or a brick and mortor type business where you actually have a store front. This is what business owners know.

you must first do only 1 MLM business. You must believe in your product and be passionate about using it. The best mlm businesses are based on consumables, like vitamins/nutraceuticals. Sell with emotion, not logic. You dont need anyone's approval, just move on when you hit a lughead. Dont take rejection personally. Work the numbers, THIS IS a numbers game. Get on the phone and learn effective 3 way calling techniques. work with your upline. dont give up. Read as many books as you can- especially ones your upline has read. Go to your industry events. Don't read the news. Always work on attitude and mental focus.
Ask the right questions and do most of the listening.
Don't forget to keep it simple. "Yes, no - gotta go".
Make sure you have the time and money to even get started! Have a few months income in the bank incase you lose momentum.

You can always right a book and say something like "MLM is the wave of the future" and people in MLM will flock to the stores to buy it!
People in MLM mindlessly attach themselves to any positive things regarding MLM. Its called selective hearing and it only helps bolster their already made up minds.
Write a book, trust me!

I think you need to define success first.
If you man get rich by mlm, chances are very, very slim.
If you mean just make some time, invest time, be patient and slowly build on customers.
If you mean make mlm the dominant sales/marketing method, keep dreaming.

Goals Goals Goals. Have them in front of you every day and be sure to break them down from yearly to monthly to weekly to daily. Stay dedicated and know that the only way to fail in MLM is to quit. If you're with a good company, your upline should be contacting you every day with tips and ideas to help you achieve success. If the marketing tools are in place, use them. Always keep in touch with your team and be sure to keep in touch with your downline to offer them help.
Do something each day that is a step outside of your comfort zone. As long as you are uncomfortable, you are growing and your business will reflect that.

It pays to be outgoing and friendly.
You have to be able to strike up conversations with strangers and work your sales pitch into the conversation quickly without being overbearing.
You have to believe in your company and believe you are truly offering friends, relatives and strangers a great opportunity to make money.
It's a hard sell and not many people will be interested, so you also have to be persistant and spread the word about the business far and wide.
