- Bob Dylan - I would suggest Bringin it All Back Home, but Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde are also classic records, to name a few
- Beatles - they're famous for a reason.... Revolver and Rubber Soul are amazing pop-rock albums, and they arent the only ones.
- Beach Boys - pet sounds (mostly sap lyrics but the music is amazing and more sophisticated than you would expect)
- Crosby Stills Nash (and Young) first few albums (again, kindof sappy)
- The Byrds ?
- OLD Chicago ? (dont know albums, or if there are compilations of just their older music)

relatively harder stuff:
- Hendrix - Are you experienced?, Axis:Bold as Love, Electric Ladyland (or just the greatest hits, bleh)
- Zeppelins first 4 are classic
- The Doors (greatest hits is probably better as IMHO their albums are spotty... but it has to have the LONG version of light my fire dangit!)
- The Rolling Stones have many good albums (Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers... Beggars Banquet), but Hot Rocks is a good compilation (unfortunately i think its expensive).
- King Crimsons first album, In the Court of the Cimson King (prog rock)
- Floyd
- Yes - Close to Edge, Fragile (prog rock), maybe not the best band to choose for this
- Yardbirds (if there is a greatest hits collections.. im not sure... but this is the group that a young eric clapton, jeff beck, and jimmy page played in at one time or another, and they have a handful of great songs)

probably alot more..

I just turned 52.:)

I used to like to listen to Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, Deep Purple, The Beatles, The Stones, etc.

Later on there was Queen, Doobie Brothers, Bob Marley and punk like The Clash, Talking Heads, etc.

You should ask your mom a bit about what sort of music she liked when she was younger, i.e. "Were you a Grateful Dead fan?" etc. Try to worm it out of her. Maybe she preferred soft country rock like The Eagles to heavier stuff like Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath (the latter of whom I really liked, too.)

You can also google Billboard to find out who the top artists were for certain years, i.e. 1971.

I loved British Invasion stuff, too.
