It is a science question, homework for a twelve year old, worth have year 8 grade!!!

Forgive my spelling. I have an engineering background.

Devices that measure forces generally rely on F=MA. They usually measure A (Acceleration) of a known mass (M).

You can make one easily at home by putting a weight on the end of a piece of string. It's a pendulum so the maths is actually a little more complicated but you can observe that when you put a bigger and bigger weight on the end of the string, yet move it sideway in the same way, the bigger weights will be much slower to react. Thereby proving the above equation (mass bigger so acceleration opposing the force is slower).

At twelve you won't be integrating/differentiating so that's it for the moment

Lets keep this one simple - all answers about newton meters are correct but an example might be a "spring balance". If you hang an object on the hook it is subjected to gravity, so the reading is proportional to the force.

It is definitely a newton meter. A newton is the standard metric (SI) measure of force, being equal to 1kg-m/s (kilogram metre per second). A mass of 100g (the mass of an average apple) will record a gravitational force or weight of one newton.
