Yes it should be banned through out the United States. There are enough bad drivers on the road that don't talk on the phone or fool around with something else. As others may have I see people eating out of containers while driving, reading newspapers ( not just at a light but in motion). Putting on make up braiding their hair. Then you have teenagers on the road too.

No, not unless they are willing to include eating, drinking (non-alcohol), putting on makeup, reading to paper, talking to kids in the back seat, listening to wife in the front seat, changing the radio station, etc.etc.
many of these are more distracting then cell phones. The measurement should be on how you are driving, not what you are doing. This is the nanny-state run amok.
And what about cops piddling with radios and radar guns. If I can't use my phone, why is it safe for the cop pulling me over to use his radio before he's stopped?

Most definitely. Did you know that tests have been done and that cell phone users are just as or even more dangerous that drunk drivers? Pretty scary. You should see all of the cell phone users here in Florida. It's bad bad news. 90 year old retirees + tourists who don't know where they are going + poorly designed roads + extremely heavy traffic + CELL PHONE USERS = a recipe for the most deadly conditions imaginable. (Hwy 19 is statistacally the most dangerous stretch of highway in the United States.)

No.
It's not about the cell phone, it's the person using the cell phone.
Seriously, there should be tests where people drive with cell phones and some where people don't.
I'm pretty sure the results will show it's not about the phone but the driver.

In New York State, there's a law in effect banning cell phone usage while driving. I think there's a clause that ok's a hands free device, though. I don't know, however, what good the law is. They never enforce it. I see stupid people doing stupid things with their stupid phones in hand anyways!

i think that with either speaker phone capability or hands-free sets and bluetooth technology coming about, the cell phone companies at least are trying to make it safer. now, does that mean that people are actually using these things? mostly not. and therein lies the problem. what's more disturbing is when i see people on the phone and doing their make-up or smoking or changing cd's.

Some states already banned it...and yes I think i think they should...its not that hard to turn the phone on speaker or have an ear piece...just as long as your not holding it...its distracting...and what happens when you need to turn unexpectedly? you have a better risk of not crashing if both hands are on the wheel.

They should have to use a hands free device such as bluetooth headsets in order to talk on a cell and drive at the same time.

In NY you need to have a headset or be hands free of the phone like via speaker phone. or you could get stopped for a ticket.
