its just a variable like x, y, c, and any other number. But the mathematicians chose "m".
and by the way...are you walking about slope-intercept form(y=Mx+b)

Slope = 7 Equation of linear line is: y-y1 = 7(x-x1) It passes N(-3, -7) y - (-7) = 7 (x -(-3)) y +7 = 7 (x + 3) by using fact the element M is on x- axis, so M's y coordinate is 0 0 + 7 = 7x + 21 -14 = 7x -2 = x answer is (-2, 0)

m is the symbol for slope. Your question is like asking Why does + mean plus?
Then I guess you're asking Why M and not some other letter or special character? A quick search reveals: http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/52477.html

it doesn't have to.
some math books represent slope with 'b'
it's just a generally accepted way of saying "slope"
it's the same with, x, y, and any other letter that represents a specific number

i have no idea. y=mx+b
I guess cause b stands for the y-intercept
x stands for well a lotta stuff
y stands for y
f stands for function
I guess most of the letters were already taken..
