I have had different views from midwives and pregnancy book on this one. I am 6 months prognant with my first and drink about five cups of regular tea a day. It is my treat to myself as there is quite a lot that I like that I have been advised to give up (soft cheeses, tuna, wine, eggs etc). I friend told me I should be cutting out all caffine ( I don't drink any coffee) and stick to yucky herbal or fruit teas. Is she right? Any horror stories concerning tea!

I agree with you that there are way too many opinions out there.
I love tea and asked my midwife what to do. All black tea is acceptable (Chai, English Breakfast, Orange Pekoe, Earl Gray)
You can get them in decaf format, but she says that the caffeine is in smaller dosages in tea than in coffee or soda. She says that 3 cups a day is acceptable.
Absolutely no chamomile (can cause malformations in the fetus)
Rosehips can contract your uterus-so wait until closer to due date to drink it.
Best of luck

Um... OK I can understand the wine, but why did you cut out soft cheese, eggs(which are very good source of protein for expecting mothers) and you don't have to cut out tuna just cut back to once or twice a week. Also they made decaf tea in regular flavor. True non-herbal tea has more caffeine then coffee, but it comes in a variety of decaf. Tell your "friend" to back the hell off! When she has a baby she can do what she wants but until then........tell her to stop giving you ill advise!

You should not drink caffine if you can help it but for someone who drinks as much tea as you do if would put the baby into withdrawls if you just stopped taking in any at all. You need to cut back to 3 cups a day and then go down to one cup a day for the health of your baby. Caffine raises your heart rate which isn't a huge deal until you end up raising it so much you start having irregular heartbeats and chest pain like a friend of mine has because of caffine. If you cut back now it will be better for baby and easier for you to keep drinking less and less even after birth.

how about decaf tea ... i am 10wk and i stopped all teh caffeine as well ... no coffee, soda, or regular tea ... i have been drinking ginger tea to ease the sickness and its caffeine free. The reason I heard its not good for baby is because after he/she is born, it could suffer from withdrawls because milk has no caffeine. I don't know how true this is. but i have heard of mothers who used drugs and their baby is born suffering from withdrawl symptoms ... caffeine is a drug so better to not take chances. Maybe cut down to 2 regular cup and 3 decaf and see if you can eventually just drink decaf for the baby's sake ... you wouldn't want to see your baby suffer over something like this. It's my 1st right now and i rather play it safe than beat my self up later on down the line.

TEA DOES NOT HAVE MORE CAFFEINE THAN COFFEE, that person is totally wrong. I read on americanbaby.com that a cup of tea a day is OK. Just don't overdo it. Oh yeah, if you do use decaf, make sure it's decaffeinated with water, because some decaf processes use FORMALDEHYDE (especially coffee decaf) which is a POISON.

They have different types of decaf tea. They say it isn't to good to have alot of caffeine. Maybe cut down to a cup of day. My doctor told me that one cup of coffee a day wouldn't do anything to harm my child. I love my coffee and tea, but now I have decaf and cant tell the difference. You should try that out!!

Well, tea usually has even more caffein then coffee, so yes, you should skip it. I know, I don't like the herbal or fruit teas either, but you can get pretty good green tea naturaly decaffenated - I tried the SALADA brand and it's yummy.

You are supposed to limit caffeine. They usually say 2 cups of coffee, which is about 4 cups of tea.

Here is some info as to why:

my mom used to drink tea when she was pregnant with all 3 of us, and we do not have any problem.
But me, I do not drink coffee at all, and have light tea sometimes,
I guess you can have light tea on cup a day
