Which Motherboard Chipset is better?

Is there a big performance difference between nVidia nForce 4 chipsets and the nForce 5 series?

Not so much a performance difference as a features difference. And some of those different features give you better performance. Some of those different features allow you to run newer hardware (Faster Memory, Faster CPU's).

Yes, there is.
Fundamentally because the 500 series supports much more recent & powerful CPU's.
