Opininatedkitten told you the truth, except for that BS about psychoanalysis. Why does this question, an easy question, always get bungled so badly in this section? We use all of our brain and evolved to do so. The brain is too expensive a gadget to be only used 10% of the time. MRI and fPET scans show us how the brain is being utilized. How can you improve efficiency? Stop clogging your memory with useless and refuted concepts, for a start. Get a good education, in other words.

Those studies are false and based on false assumptions on how the human mind works. They are also based on western civilization's obsession to control things.
If you don't believe that, think about it: If I surgically remove 90% of your brain, how long do you think you'll survive?
What is meant is that conscious brain processes use about 10% of the brain. This gives the hope that the other 90% of the brain can somehow be 'Harnessed' to do your will as well.
A lot of those brain cells are busy ensuring your body temperature stays constant, regulating digestion and bowel movements, deciding when to lower or raise your heart rate, etc... Some meditation techniques have been known to provide some control over these functions - but over years of patient meditation - Shaolin monks have achieved amazing results (Raising their body temperatures, for example).
Other functions are part of what is now known as the unconscious mind. Sex, for example, the fact that you're attracted to one person and not another, are controlled by parts of the brain you have no conscious control over. Tying of certain music to certain emotions, etc... Methods such as psychoanalysis can get you more in touch with these parts of the mind, but you'll never 'control' it. The idea of psychoanalysis is to get to know yourself better and to be better in tune with who you truly are.
Finally, most of your memories are inaccessible to you. Mnemonic techniques are numerous, but you'll never have a perfect memory. In fact, psychologists have found that the forgetting aspect of memory seems to be a defence mechanism. People whose memories are too good tend to become unable to function in the world - they get boggled down with insignificant details from the past and become unable to move on, emotionally or intellectually. It would seem the human mind forgets things on purpose when it doesn't need them anymore, to make room for stuff that is more relevant to the present. Psychoanalysis can help people retrieve certain memories and get in touch with their past, and how it influences them today, however.
But trust me: You use 100% of your brain and always will. You can, however, become more aware of what's going on in there and live a more harmonious life.

I am looking for the same answer and here is what I do.
Learn something new.
If you're right handed learn to use your left hand.
Do puzzles.
Instead of doing the same routine do it in another way.
I even practice looking in the mirror to see if I can change my eye color; they usually change on their own, but I want to do it on my own once.
Think in a newer manner instead of the same old way.

unfortunately, everyone is born with a certain capacity of their brain that they can use at one time. get too much higher than 10% and you'd be what people consider a genius or savant.

They say varying your routine... like brushing your teeth with your left hand if you are right handed and stand on one foot while you do it... of course reading and learning new things always increases brain power!

Try meditation, if nothing else it least it will relax you some and you won't worry so much about how much of your brain you aren't using.
