I plug it in and switch on. No lights come on the front of the case, no fans turn, no hard disk spins. I've replaced the power supply unit, but the problem is the same.

the one thing no-one has bothered to mention is the usual cause... Change the internal battery, a few quid, this can rectify the problem a lot of the time... Youre not getting any power at all and this sounds like the battery is dead, if this is the case it wont budge at all, coz the battery powers the BIOS, and without this the rest of the system wont boot... Good luck...

Your not doing something right then, if you replaced the power supply.. Your HDD should at least show signs of life, otherwise its your motherboard.. Check where you are plugging the power supply into the wall at..

usually on the front of the tower, there is a small reset button as an escape for a frozen screen, and then a bigger one, usually with a jight in it
make sure the bigger button is making contact, that when pressed, electricaly starts up power sypply, fans and such
they will ware out. just because the button pops back up after it is pressed, does not mean that it is still working side

If it's on at the plug, could it maybe be the on/off switch on the back of the case. Assuming there is one of course.

If it's not the power supply, then it sound like you have a bad motherboard. Depending on how old your PC is, it may be more ecconomical to buy a barebones PC and add parts like your hard drive, memory?, video card?, etc.

No life from the PSU cooling fan, even the new one? Sorry to suggest something so blindingly obvious, but have you checked the fuse in the mains plug?
