Well largest could mean that it takes up the most amount of square footage or maybe it holds the highest volume of water.

Now longest has to do with the distance or length of the river, so if it is 10 miles long then it is a long river.

Skagit River:

"Healthy annual runs of salmon anchor the web of life in the Skagit, the third-largest river system in the western United States. The Skagit system encompasses more than 3,000 rivers and streams and produces one-quarter of all the fresh water flowing into Puget Sound."

Since it is the third-largest *system*, it includes tributaries, etc., which add to the volume and numbers, but not the length.

largest has to do either with width or with the overall area it encompasses, whereas length is only one dimension. fro example, a river maybe really long but very narrow- it would be long but not large. on the other hand, a river could be fairly short but extremely wide with several tributaries- this would make it large but not long.
