some say tuna is ok, some say not. Raw fish is not good. Pregnant women are 20-30% more likely to become sick from bacteria on the food. Sushi that doesn't have fish or has cooked fish is ok...so long as its prepared by reputable and clean institution. Salmon should be wild and not farm raised. Those are the most common type of fish. But there are others that are safe and other that should be completely avoided during pregnancy and while brestfeeding.

You're not suppose to eat RAW sushi because of possible bacteria on uncooked food. I love sushi and ate California rolls when pregnant but I made sure the crab meat was "imitation." The tuna/mercury issue is up for debate because there are such small, almost trace amounts of mercury in canned tuna. However, it's probably best just to stay away.

Certain types pregnant women are supposed to avoid (this has been widely publicized) due to high amounts of mercury among other elements. At least I think it was mercury. I think it was like swordfish, shark, some others. And I think part of the thing with the sushi is the whole raw fish deal (even though sushi itself does not mean raw fish, some sushi ingredients can be raw fish).

some fish is advised to avoid because of the high mercury levels which has been linked to autism. Tuna is safe in moderation but dont go eating a can a day. You shouldnt eat raw fish of any kind but you can safely eat cooked fish once or twice a week, such as salmon, shrimp, etc. Oh yea shell fish should also be avoided.

You are only aloud to eat 2 small tins of tuna a week due to levels of mercury. Any uncooked meats or fish eg. pate or sushi are not aloud for reasons of contamination, salmonella and parasites. Shrimp is fine as long as its well cooked. I'm surprised your midwife would not have explained this to you?

You shouldn't eat fish or sushi during pregnancy because of the mercury found in fish. It can cause the child to have learning disorders, etc.

There ARE some fish they say it is OK to eat, but honestly, if you want to make sure you aren't ingesting any mercury, you should steer clear of it.
This article breaks it down really well, though:

I think the maximum amount of tuna you can eat is 3oz per week to avoid too much mercury.
