one more thing - i turn my python's heat lamp off for 12 hours (at night) but i also provide him with a uv light. should i keep this on during the nighttime or turn it off as well? is complete darkness okay or not okay?

Wow, for someone that supposedly raised 175 snakes... the previous person certainly doesn't know much about them.

Snakes do not need UV light, or any special lighting for that matter. On the contrary, too much light can stress out your Ball Python. Being nocturnal animals, they require a period darkness.
Just make sure that the cage temps stay warm enough without the light. A black or red light would work at night, but a better solution would be to get an under tank heater (UTH) and connect it to a rheostat (dimmer) or thermostat. Ball Python Lighting

Does not need uv at all. Balls are nocturnal and never see the light of day anyway. Just give him a constant source of heat like an under tank heater and a couple of hiding spots. I put one over his undertank heater and one on other side of tank. Mine is 5 feet long and 13 years old with a clean bill of health from the vet.

all the experts say that 12 hrs. total darkness is prefered by ball pythons but the UV light, as long as its red, can be left on if you need to maintain the proper temperature. i've known several owners who left UV lights on all the time. it doesn't hurt anything.
P.S. heat rocks are a very bad idea. if the rock gets too hot, the snake won't know enough to move away until the belly scales are burnt to the rock. maintain ambient temp. to 85-90F. daylight and a "sunning area" of 90-95F. and during the night keep it around 75-80F. your snake'll love you for it.

i Agree DONT get a heat rock thats stupid its true snakes are slow to reconize heat so they WILL burn on a heat rock. if you keep the light on durning the day and the uv on you can turn both off at night i do but i have a heater under the tank t keep it warm also make sure you have some sort of heat source at night. it is ok for them to be im complete darkness. They prefeer it sometimes

Do not use UVB lighting with snakes, they do not need it and most times can be detrimental. Heat light is not the best either, a good UTH [heat pad or heattape] is best with no light whatsoever. Make sure you use a thermostat and measure the temps digitally.

must agree with xyz lol.. she sure didnt. no snakes do not need uv ligthin that ok for lizards though... with our ball we have the heat light on for 12 hours and wehn it goes off we have a night buld that keeps the tank warm... and do NOT use heatrock .. those can burn your snakes.

UV light always and instead of a heat light which is bad use a heating rock. The heat light can burn snakes have no sense of temp. rating. hence the heat rock.

that would be fine BUT make sure the tank stays warm...cold snake = dead snake.
