Renault megane coupe automatic gearbox problem?

I have got a renault megane coupe automatic but the gearbox has decided to stop working and i need some advice on what could be wrong. The problem with it is that none of the forward gears will work, the only gear which is working is reverse. the megane is a 1998 model and i know renault brought out a new gearbox in that year but i don't know which version the car has got but i have got in touch with a couple of automatic gearbox specialists and they are quoting me over a £1000 to repair it and i was wondering if it should cost that much. I just wanted to know if anyone has had this trouble before or anyone knew what this problem could be so that i don't get ripped off. The car is currently situated in Wiltshire as i can't drive it anywhere, i need to get it fixed locally if possible as i can't tow an automatic and don't know of anyone who could pick it up for me. Any help anyone could give me would be very much appreciated.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but when an auto box goes wrong it is a specialist job to put it right again, and yes they're gonna make you pay. I don't want to sound patronising but have you checked the fluid level, it must be checked with the engine running.
You should be OK towing an auto but don't go over 30mph. I say this, BUT please check the hand book.
Maybe a second hand box would be a cheaper option.

it sounds like the box has **** itself, are there any scrapyards local to it that may have a second hand gearbox?, you can tow an auto under 30mph and no more than 50 miles. It could possibly be the torque converter(equivelent to an autos clutch) but it is impossible to tell without seeing it.
