Most school districts require at least a bachlors degree, teachers certification (including emergency certifications, you just have to be certified), no criminal record, good teaching principals, and are good with kids.

Check each state's department of education web site.

Usually, a minimum of a Bachelor's is required. In California, you also have to pass the CBEST and be working towards a credential.

As the others stated it depends on the state. Usually private schools don't have to meet the state requirements so you would want to check with those schools to see what they require, usually a bachelors degree.
