When I had my daughter, the nurse in the hospital told me to only feed her one ounce every couple of hours. My daughter would cry so much, and when I did feed her she gulped it down. I was a first time mom and had no idea that she was pretty much starving! I took her to her doctor right away because I couldn't understand and the doctor told me that for newborn babies, if they're hungry you feed them, period. My daughterwound up eating about the same as your baby, and even as often. It is perfectly normal. I don't understand why those nurses said that. Hope I helped! Feed your baby!

Yes very normal. Doc's and nurses will try to tell you to put the baby on a schedule. The 4oz every 4 hrs is a crime as far as I'm concerned. For at least the first 4-6 weeks feed her when she's hungry. Some babies have quicker metabolisms then others and process the food quicker. A breast fed baby will eat more often also. Around the 4 week mark I would start to work toward a schedule. but you should always remain flexible to her hunger. That's not saying making her wait 15 or 20 minutes to be fed is a bad thing. Helps her learn early how to deal with not getting what she wants right away.

While we know Dr's know best and research says this and that... modern thought changes just as much as computers.

Every baby is different. My advice to you is to do what is best for your baby. She will not be overfed. Anything that is excess will "come up" trust me. Babies know when they are full. Also be careful not to let the baby fall asleep before a proper feeding. Don't cuddle her too much at night...babies get comfy and warm and will fall asleep before their tummies are full. Hold them out a bit and feed her.

You're only a week and half out. In the comming weeks you'll start to pick up on her schedule. Jot down on a piece of paper (if you can stay awake that long or remember to do so when you wake up) her times and # of oz. Perhaps you'll see a pattern.

Other than that, go with the flow. She's fine!

Oh my gosh, I had the same problem. My little one wanted to eat every 2 hours to. I asked her doctor what he suggested (my mother suggested giving her water in between feedings) but the doctor said he would not recommend this, he did not say why. He just said to keep feeding her when she wanted to however much she wanted. She was born in Oct and about 3 weeks ago started eating every 3 to 4 hours, with one long 5 hour stretch at night. Don't worry. Your little one will figure it out on her own. For now just feed her on demand.

Generally 2-4 hours apart for feedings is normal, and within that it varies astoundingly from baby to baby. Babies will generally not eat more than they should. Your doctor will let you know at checkups if she's overweight, and what to do from there. For the most part, any extra weight will be shed when she starts crawling. It sounds like she's doing just fine, though.

at this early age you'll only be frustrating both of you if you try to schedule things. feed her when she is hungry, which will make for a happy mommy AND baby. soon she will start taking more ounces at each feeding and the time between will be longer. my son ate every two hours for the first few weeks. then spread it out for a bit, now he still eats every two hours, except he sleeps ten hours at night :) he is 5 months.

There is no "pattern" to newborns. They eat, sleep and poop whenever they want. Generally, newborns need to eat every 2-3 hours. It's impossible to overfeed your baby since she will let you know she's had enough but turning away or losing interest.

Sorry, at this point you pretty much have to do what the baby wants. As she gets older she herself most likely will develop certain feeding/sleeping pattern.

as long as he's getting adequate formula in the course of the time he's conscious, then he must be fantastic to pass by using the evening without feeds. you're between the fortunate moms who has a very reliable sleeper. as long as he's gaining weight and nonetheless has between 6-10 moist diapers an afternoon, then all is ideal.
