I have the same problem, my wife went out and bought for herself the same thing I was going to give her. We took back hers, but now she has it and I don't have a BIG item to give her. Thankfully, I have several smaller items so she will at least have something surprising to open that morning. I am also considering wrapping a bow around the big gift and secretly placing it under the tree Chrsitmas eve to remind her that she already got her big gift.
So, my suggestion is to do the same, get some smaller gifts so he has some surprises to open, and maybe wrap up the BIG item again to give it to him again on Christmas morning.

either give it to him early, or take it back and get something else. The other thing you can do is try to rewrap it so he doesn't know thats it and tell him you took it back.
My mom did that when I was a kid. I saw a game i was getting. so she said she took it back. then she wrapped it in a blanket then wrapped it so I had no idea what the heck it was.

You go out and get something equally cool and the act as surprised as you can when you open your gift.

did you tell him that it was for him? cause you can say that it isn't for you. say that it is for my dad. or what ever. and if it was really specail the maybe you should just keep it, and just wrap it in a different wrapping paper. and stuff it with tissues so that he wont know what the right shape. and he wont be expecting it.

Did he seem happy with it? If not, take it back and exchange it for something else!
