I am 38 years of age and was wondering if it would be too late to go back to school to try an get at least an associates degree (if not a Bachelor's degree) in fixing computers. I already have some college behind me (28 credits) but never finished because I had to drop out of school to care for my son when my girlfriend decided she couldn't be tied down with caring for a child. I am concerned about age discrimination because I would be in my forties when I graduate but I want to better my life. Can anyone offer advice and let me know what I can do?? Thank you!!

I am currently an undergraduate student and have had more than one older person in my classes. So far as I know, they haven't been discriminated against in any way by the rest of the students. If that is a concern though, there are some colleges that specifically cater towards older people. Also, if you were to just take classes at a community college, I would think there would be more older students than at a University. I wouldn't let fear of discrimination deter you from going to school again if it's something you really want to do!

Well, I'm 34 and I'm almost finished with a bachelors degree. I'm a firm believer in that saying that "It's better late than never." You should really check into what's available online for you in the field that you're looking for. There are so many degrees which you can attain through online universities now, it's likely you'd find something for yourself there.

Take a look at the links I've attached...

Good Luck to you! It's never too late to go back to school, and I wouldn't worry about the 'age stigma' that you're talking about, that's in YOUR mind no one else's.

No, it's not to late for you to go back to school. In technical college I was in a couple classes with people over 50. And I know at Georgia Tech. the average age for a student is 28-30. Most people don't go to college until they are at least 25. You'll be surprised at how many people will be at any college that are older than you. Good luck.

NO way never too late. I was 37 when I decided to go back to school. I was/am working for a company that actually would pay for the courses/degree and I thought why not let me take night courses. Now mind you I work full time, my son at that time was 8 years old and yes I have a marriage going. I talked to my husband and he was like yes go for it. I did it. It was not easy and many a times I thought why am I doing this I am too old but I was so happy when I finished it. I felt like I accomplished something. I am very proud of myself for it. I was so proud of myself I sent myself to a weekend stay in Marco Island. LOL. So ok long story summary Yes go for it. If you do not do it you will always have that question "I wonder what would of happened if...."

I am 38 and am just finishing my first semester in pursuit of my Associates degree. It is never too late to further your education.
I am going through Ashworth College for my Associates and then if I want to get a Bachelors I will transfer to a traditional college. Good luck to you! On another note, Kudos to you for taking responsibility for your child. Shame on your girlfriend for being a deadbeat parent. How could any mother not want her child.

It's never too late! Some people don't really become good students until they "grow up a little." It sounds like you know what to expect. Yeah, some of the punk teenagers may give you a hard time, but who cares what they think? You'll have the opportunity to make more money and get a better job.

if you are not a complete idiot I could teach you to do everything with computers just using a screwdriver in about 3 months. Meaning it it a piece of cake. Funny enough I have a friend with suhc a degree and he calls me every time he hes to re install windows so there you go. Why not get old computers from the tip and start fixing those? You'll soon see if you are meant for it.

You gotta be kidding! this is kinda weird. We have everything in common except the kid. I very eagerly wanted to go to school to do the same exact thing and I am going already. Its really never too late. But, i think this would be the best time ever. Your still very young and I am sure you want to give your son alot more than you can right now. Do it, it will be very much worth it!

I spent 20 years with Uncle Sam's Navy and finished up my BS in accounting at 40-my MS in Information Systems at 44- it's never too late!!(Thanks to my very patient and understanding wife and sons!)
You put you life on hold for your son- you did the right thing then, now show him what it means to better yourself-hopefulley, he'll learn from your example and do the same for himself..
