Why a strong central govt, rather than strong state and local governments? Why is a strong central government a good thing? The country is so diverse that wouldn't it be better if the federal government left more things up to the state and local governments?

With the federal government your able to force a larger part of the country (the entire country) to uphold your view. When people wanted to make abortion legal, they didn't just want it to happen in their state. They wanted to force it on the entire poppulation regardless of the people's will.

That's what we call a democracy. The will of the minority trumps the will of the majority.

For the very reason that America IS so diverse, there are somethings best left to the Federal government. For example - how about roads... A rich state or local area could afford to build and expand roads, which would enhance tourism, would lure business, would help create growth in the area. A poorer state could not afford that - and so would suffer in a relative way being unable to do what the richer state could.

If all states were more or less equal in size, in wealth, in resources, then I'd be more inclined to agree... however with our diverse country, there should be some Federally mandated equalizers as well as having the State / Local provide those things best left to the State / Local.

I believe in smaller government, with most power going to the states. But if things always worked that way, we wouldn't be 'united' states...some women could vote, others couldn't, etc...

Your answer is almost in your question!

Basically, states would like to be more autonomous and do have the power but, they work with the government for one big reason... Believe it or not, it's for money that the Fed's can hold back, not distribute or bribe states with.
An example would be: If you do not make the freeway speed limit 55, we will with hold money earmarked to build better freeways in your state. How do you like them apples? Our money, their decision!
