Last names many times come from your ancestors occupation. A smith is a metal worker
hence the names like Goldsmith..etc. The Germanic "Schmidt" was anglicized as Smith.

I'm not sure, but there are a lot of Jones too! It could go back to the Pilgrims, remember John Smith.

My maiden name is Smith, and I was told that it was changed from Schmidt when my grandfather escaped from germany and came to america.
