all of the games are their own seperate game.
when square almost went bankrupt before releasing the first of the franchise, it turned out that sales of the game "Final Fantasy" saved the company.
in order to let customers know that another game was made by the same developers, it was also called final fantasy.
offshoots of other games, such as seiken densetsu and SaGa were sold at first under the names "final fantasy adventure" and "final fantasy legend" respectively, just to borrow the name to bolster sales - even though they are not actually final fantasy games.
many of the games share common things.
crystals are present in all of the games, in one form or another - sometimes as magicite/materia
chocobos were introduced in FFII
item names/uses were common among games in a series - as they evolved
many monsters have lived through most of the games, such as the malboro, the imp/goblin, etc...
summons that started (i think) in FFII have lived through the games. most keep the same names, such as shiva, but some change names, such as ramuh/indra
magics were called such names as fire, fir2/fire2, fir3/fire3 until they were changed to fire, fira, and firaga in VIII - since then, the term 'ga' on the end usually means it has a massive affect, i.e. hastega and graviga
moogles are also in most of the games, starting with VI - where a moogle named mog could join your group
classes are also a common theme. the blue mage arrived in FFIII as a class - also in V, in FFVI strago was a blue mage, in VII there were materia that let you learn enemy magics, VIII had quistis as a blue mage, in IX it was quina, in X it was the ronso

About all they share besides the title is the main theme song "The Prelude" and a character by the name of Cid. Final Fantasy X & X-2 were the only direct sequels in the entire series (not counting all those subpar VII spin-offs).

It is mostly just the name that they all share. This is due to the games having an in depth storyline with a finalized ending.

Mostly in name, but there are a few elements that are the same throughout the game, starting with FFII with the recurring character of Cid.
