He, like many other commentators, is an agitator. That is his job - to make comments that make people think, even if they have to take things to an extreme. Look at Hannity and Combes - extreme left and extreme right, but a very successful show.

As their popularity has declined, the outrageous meanness of the extremist neocons has increased. The last elections showed that they have their backs against the wall. They seem to be in competition in finding the most vulnerable people that they can hurt worse. After it became popular for the right to dis grieving mothers of war heroes, Ann Coulter took on the widows of 911 victims. Not to be outdone Rush Limbaugh started making fun of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson symptoms. Now Michael Savage seems to have crossed some kind of line with his comments on a child who was a kidnap victim at the age of 14. Is this what they mean by "compassionate conservatism"?

I haven't heard his comments about Smart. However I've never heard him open his mouth and not cross it.

yes he did cross the line. Savage proved that it isn't liberalism that is a disease, it is people that have access to an open mike on the radio that is a disease.
