Do you think that majority rule is the best way to decide things? Why or why not?

not a chance. with as many people we have it will bog down the govt and nothing gets done. It only works on a small scale. look into the history of a large true democracy it doesnt work. NOT ONCE
this is why our founding fathers were adamant about a democratic republic.

Not always. It is ok for deciding leaders and getting certain laws passed but it is can lead to problems when deciding what people's rights are.

I don't want to turn this into a religious discussion, but my example uses religion because it is an easy one to understand.

Lets say that a country is 80% religion A and 20% religion B. Religion A does not like how religion B does their worshipping or their beliefs or whatnot. Religion A has the clear majority here and they can easily pass whatever law they want. Religon B cannot get the votes needed to overcome Religion A because they just don't have that many people. Religion A decides that they need to pass laws to prevent Religion B from worshipping the way they want to. In fact, they pretty much just outlaw Religion B. This is where majority rule causes problems. Sometimes, just because there are more of you, that does not mean that every decision that you make is the right one. I am not saying abolish majority decisions in our government. We just have a government with certain checks and balances to hopefully prevent abuses.

Well, the minority currently rules in North Korea, Cuba and a few other countries - the people that live there seem to think that it sucks. The majority is not always right, but it is the majority - who would you rather have after you? Most of the people or some of the people?

Yes. It is better than consensus. The traditional democratic structure of the U.S. is a good thing but right now is corrupt and unprincipled. There are no Abraham Lincolns or John F. Kennedys out there to deal with the problem.

In consensus, we must force everyone to agree even if they disagree. It is unrealistic and nihilistic. Sometimes, one must make concessions for minorities or allow them their way of things. It is a careful balance.

Other times, you must do what is best for most but not all. 60-65 percent of Americans, in survey after survey, are cautiously pro-choice. So allowing the religious right to take over the reproductive rights argument with pro-life agenda is favouritism and indicative of political bias. A minority is getting a say over the majority. There is also no consensus between two opposing perspectives.

Majority rule is akin to "mob rule"...and since the majority isn't always right, I'd say no, majority rule is not the best way to decide anything.

Yes, or the rich will always get to decide. Majority vote might not bring the best solution, but it surely bring a decent one for the majority.

I believe everyone should have a voice but since that would never happen in the real world WE as a country vote to have selected people do that for us.Unfortunately people tend to select douche bags who only care about their pockets so in the end we're usually screwed.Gotta love America.

No, it just reinforces the idea that the people run the government, when really we just elect the people who run the government. After we vote we cant say much else.

That is why our Democratic Republic has lasted 230 years.
