What is the best neighborhood to live in in Boston? I'm 15, I live up in NH, and am way more independent then I should be. (I am not having sex, using drugs or drinking.) Obviously, I'm not old enough to get my own apartment in Boston yet (or anywhere,) but I like to plan ahead, even if these plans aren't definite.
I want to know which neighborhood would be safest for an 18 yr-old girl, would have a good atmosphere, be CLEAN, and not extremely expensive. (i.e. shops, rent, food.)
Think you could help me out here?

If you are looking for a comfortable neighborhood with a lot of parks and open space with a reputation for being safe then Brookline (surrounded by the city of Boston) is a good choice.
If you will be going to school and hanging with students in an area that caters to partying young people with a lot of low-rent apartments, decent affordable restaurants and popular nightclubs then the areas along Comm Ave (like Allston and Brighton neighborhoods of Boston) are preferable.

I live in Brighton right on the Allston line and also a few blocks from Brookline. All of those areas are great, and also Cambridge and the Fenway and Back Bay areas as well as Jamaica Plain are also good areas. Probably Brookline and Back Bay are the most expensive of those areas but all are good. Of course, anywhere in Boston is expensive so it's all relative. But it's a great city to go to school in. And as someone said, stay away from Dorchester, Roxbury or Chelsea.
P.S. The Departed was filmed just about completely in Boston. I work right downtown and all of those buildings are definitely right near where I work. That really is the State House, and I also recognized scenes from Logan Airport and the Boston subway since I've been to those places dozens (probably literally hundreds) of times. Much of it was also filmed in Quincy. And it's not at all dangerous. Boston is an extremely safe city.

If you plan on moving to Boston after HS, I would suggest the Allston/Brighton area. Very cool, hip and more affordable than the rest of the city. If you don't mind living a bit outside the city but still accessible by the T (10-15 min by train to Boston downtown), you could consider Jamaica Plain. Similar to Allston/Brighton, but a bit less college student filled and a bit more young professionals live around there but not pretentious like Cambridge or Brookline. Both neighborhoods have shops, restaurants and a neighborhood-like feel not like being in downtown Boston, for instance.

Everywhere in Boston is expensive. And probably somewhat less safe than rural New Hampshire (if that is where you live) because it is a major city, after all. But then again, there are all kinds of secrets kept in rural NH towns.
In any case, what is "best" depends on what you want. An eclectic neighborhood or not? Near shops or not? In university or medical center areas or not? Lots of clubs and restaurants and other entertainment venues or not? Within walking distance of downtown (which is very safe,

Are you kidding me Lauryn B? After seeing "The Departed" which was mostly shot in Brooklyn, NY, you don't want to live in Boston. And even the filmmakers were trying to depict "Southie" which is the old boston.
Boston is also one of the safest cities in the country, and the "The Departed" is nothing more that just a fictitious movie. Grow up.

Boston is one of the most expensive cities to live in but is a great American city.....I went to school there. That being said, like all cities there are dangerous sections. What are you looking for?
I really do suggest going to school in Boston......it's my hometown and has some great schools!
Plus some great teams if you like sports.... :)

Try any of these cities :Allston, Brighton, Cambridge or Somerville. They are all right outside of Boston, so they'll be way cheaper, and safer. Plus it's where there's a lot of fun places to hang out, etc.

I have a sister who wants to live in Boston too! I have never been there, but after seeing The Departed with Leo Dicprio and Matt Damon I dont think I want to live there. I guess just as long as you do not go downtown you should be all right. you should go to Yahoo! travel and look up Boston. That may help some.

Basically, there is no safe area in Boston. It's better to have people walk with you at late night in Boston. Revere and Dorchester are the worst. Cambridge, brookline are consider bit better.
Nice safe area close to Boston are Newton, Arlington, Belmont and Lexington.
