I am ready to build my first PC from scratch (well, almost I will be salvaging a few parts form my current PC) I just need to know if I have everything I need on my shopping list

CPU
Mobo
RAM
HDD
Optical Drive
Floppy Drive
Graphics Card
Case
PSU
Thermal Compound

Anything else I need?

Just to clarify, I'm getting a Core 2 Duo which is supplied with a pretty decent fan. Case is a thermaltake and has several fans fitted.

Other parts such as sound and network cards will be salvaged from the old wreck im using now.

You seem to have them all, though you may want to add if the CPU doesn't come with one, a HeatSink Fan solution.

Let me list how I build them see if you got the same:
Case w/ PSU
Mobo: Built in Sound and Network
CPU/Fan/thermal grease
RAM
Video Card
HDD
A DvD/CD of choice
Floppy Drive(If you have a use for one).

Ok after going over it you do in fact have them all, except maybe the Network Card and the Sound Card if not integrated.

pretty much hit the nail on the head, but you also need to consider perifials, such as screen, speakers, mouse and keyboard. If you plan on getting a new mouse go for a logitech set point one with the media keys, its worth the buy. Really fast, wireless (10ft or so), and its fits th ehand nicely. the media keys work also, if you decide to use them.

Anything from legitech is a good idea, they do a better job than most on their equiptment.

Software is also what you need, don't go for windows vista just yet either. wait till they get to they acutally know it will work without bugs, but xp is really all you should need for now. Antiviral software is also something to consider.

I did it once but don't want to do it again because it doesn't save you much, and the biggest mistake I made is that I didn't buy an extra quiet CPU fan. Maybe it's not just the fan, anyway, the whole box is so noisy.

Do you have all the cables that you need, such as IDE cables, floppy cables, etc?

How about the CPU fan? Do you have the clips to hold it down?

Do you have the screws and the posts for the motherboard?
