I just realized that there is this neat little place down in Southern Africa. It seems pretty orderly - does anyone know more about it? Especially in terms of "would someone from Europe or North America like living there?"

My answer comes from experience gained a long time ago as I lived there for 6 months in 1988. Namibia used to be a German colony and the German influence is very strongly felt and seen. I loved Windhoek, the capital, as well as the North - one of few places one earth where you can still lose yourself in a true wilderness. Swakopmund is a gorgeous little town and the area around is stunning - you see desert sand dunes on one side of the road and the ocean on the other.
It's a land of contrasts - full of proud indigenous tribes, European influences and beautiful African wildlife.

I went to Swakopmund in Namibia for a short vacation and I've decided that I am going to retire there. It is stunning. Lovely if you don't have a problem to drive long distances. All the places are very far apart, but worth the drive.

I lived there one year in 2004-2005. It was really wonderful : Namibia is magic (and I choose my words). To see absolutely : Sossuvlei Dunes, Fish River Canyon (second canyons in the world), Kaokoland, Epupa Falls, Kalahari desert and many things. According to me, it will be a good memory if you like wildlife, landscapes and if you aren't not afraid being alone. Namibia is quite new and its cultural life is not such developed. Globally, Namibian people can be suspicious in the beginning, so it can be necessary to be persistent to know them. Wonderful experience.

Beautiful country with great people. Strong German, British and South African Influence. Sparsely populated with most people living in the capital Windhoek. Warm and dry climate. Biggest language is Afrikaans (derived from Dutch) but the official language is English. Desert in the west, dry savanna in the east, subtropical in the far north and northeast. Great gameviewing areas in the north of which Etosha is the biggest and most famous.
Go visit - you won't be disappointed.
