They're very similar. MCE has a lower price point. MCE has sound & video functions that aren't part of XP Pro. MCE can't join a domain, XP Pro can. Both will do NTFS permissions, both will do file encryption. Aside from the domain bit, networking is the same. For a home user that doesn't need to be in a domain, MCE is probably a better choice.

XP MCE is basically XP Pro with added multimedia applications and without the ability to join network domains.
XP MCE is sometimes cheaper than XP Pro, and if you're not in an office environment, you'll probably never need network domains.

I have both on separate PCs. The Media Center is indeed XP Pro with added multimedia capabilities. If you have a TV card on your PC then you should use Media Center because of it's excellent Digital video recording capabilities.
It usually includes a remote control unit & after connecting the PC to my 42 inch LCD TV all I can say is .....WOW !!!!
It allows you to download TV listings & program recordings of your favorite shows weeks ahead.....many many more advanced features too numerous to list here...please visit this site for all the details:

XP Media Center Edition is streamlined for use for watching movies and tv, playing music, and organizing photos. You can still do everything basic that you can with XP Pro. However, I would personally recommend XP Pro.

Wait till Vista comes out! If you're confused now. There are at least 5 count them (5 or more) versions of Vista! Good luck figuring out which one to buy.
