because people just don't listen.
you proved it here yourself...this is not a question (which you stated), therefore you didn't listen to the rules/guidelines set out by Yahoo Answers.
I'm not trying to be rude, just putting things in perspective.

There are many factors that play into this issue.
First, people in today's society are inpatient.
Second, they are tired of automated phone lines, so they don't care what they push as long as they get to someone.
Third, you could have a bad phone line wiring where calls that shouldn't come to you, do anyway.
Fourth, they are dumb and don't understand the options.
We could go on and on. The best thing is to remain calm, ask them how they reached you, and maybe you'll pinpoint the problem.

I manage a security company and call centre for a number of companies and I have to agree, people do not listen to what is said to them - I often hear my operators repeating very simple instructions or information over and over again to callers. Usually it is because the callers are not getting the answer they want. It comes down to rudeness I think - and peoples overblown idea of their own importance (ie, my question is important to me so it must be treated as important by everyone else). I am really glad about the advent of caller line id as I am now able to record the numbers of abusive or nuisance callers and pass them on to the appropriate authorities.

Try this.......
"Emergency services, what is the nature of your emergency."
"How much is the cost of gas?"
"Do you have a gas emergency sir?"
"No, I want to know how much gas costs."
"I'm sorry sir, this is an emergency line only." CLICK

Vent away. Doesn't your company have a means of tracking those who abuse the system in this way? maybe that is one for the suggestion box!

Welcome to the wonderful world of customer service!!
Get used to it, idiots like the ones that you encounter are plenty!!
They know which lines will get them to a live person and don't care about the guidelines.
Thanks by the way, it does feel good to vent!!
