Well, I read books that I randomly pick up at Borders that are of several different genres.
I tend not to read a lot of fiction because I write it instead. Ha.
But...hm.
One of my favorite books of all time is called The Mind's I. It's a huge book about the size of the Bible. I've had it for years and I pick it up from time to time. It's philosophical and theoretical fiction, mostly. Fictional accounts of inquisitive "self" in various "scientific" (potential futuristic science) experiments.
Hmm. Nick Hornsby is an excellent author.
Shrodinger's Cat is a fun read.
A Clock Work Orange is, in my opinion, a million times better than the movie. I really want to read it again, actually.
The Plato Papers by Peter Akroyd is another one of my favorite books.
Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman is a very comprehensible tale explaining relativity through a series of situations with different spectrums of time emphasized.
Charles Bukowski is one of my favorite authors. He is very blunt, but brilliant in the lines in between the stories. A very quick read, too.
Non-fiction can be just as exciting as fiction, especially when you take into account that it's actually TRUE. I like to read about prominent historical figures and analyze their psyche. Neuroscientific texts give you quite startling medical accounts of patients having strange neurological disorders...I think it can be truly fascinating, but..then again, I am going for my masters in neuroscience...so I suppose I'm biased.
Good luck!!!

All of Laurell K. Hamilton's books are great. They include the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series of about 12 books as well as the Merry Gentry series of 5 books. The latest of those just came out yesterday.
I love all paranormal books with witches, vampires, faeries, werewolves, etc. and other good authors are Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris', Christine Feehan, and Christine Warren. There are lots of others but I can't think of them right at the moment. Oh. I also like the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
I prefer series books but others that aren't series that I like are John Grisham, Dan Brown, and J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts).

An Innocent Man by John Grisham. It's the true story of four men who were tried for two separate murders and ended up on death row despite the fact that there was absolutely no evidence that a rational person would have considered. The media whipped the locals into a fury and they condemned 4 men to many years in prison based on public opinion. It will challenge your beleifs about the legal sytem and the death penalty.
