Charlie Rich; my dad had the album on all the time when i was little. The song by Prince doesn't have 'did' before the rest of the title; also he sang very squeaky whereas the Charlie Rich had quite a deep voice. Hope that helps!

Yeah it was Charlie Rich, A sad story that goes with that is when my mum & dad split up many many years ago, I remember seeing my dad crying in the living room as he listened to the words, worse than that the very next song to be played on the radio was Honey come back by Glenn Campbell. It still brings a lump to my throat now.
