Lots of things can be wrong with your mower. In my experience the most common problems are (in no particular order):
1. bad air filter. Take it off, see how funky it is, if too funky to clean by blowing compressed air through it, replace it.
2. bad spark plug - take it out (unscrew) look to see how worn the contact are, usually a good idea to replace about once per year anyway, as they are cheap and new ones perform much better.
3. stale gas - gas goes stale if it sits too long. When you buy mower gas, put in a gasoline stabilizer to preserve it, otherwise, after a few months, it will not even run the mower.
4. Low on oil, if your oil is not mixed into your gas (depends on mower type) running low on oil will stop a mower engine in a heartbeat.
5. If none of these work, take it to a repair shop.
*Thanks for pointing out the filter issue Gunner, I have always had sponge filters, not the paper kind.

Remove the spark plug lead from the spark plug. Always do this before attempting any repairs to a lawnmower.
If your lawnmower is a "four stroke" mower (separate petrol and oil), tip the mower so that the spark plug is pointing skyward. Never tip it on its side with the spark plug to the ground.
If your lawnmower is "2 stroke" (oil and petrol mixed) turn off fuel tap. You can tip a two stroke mower any way that is suitable to you.
To change a blade, or blade disc, it is often easier to remove the spark plug and feed a length of string into the cylinder head to 'lock' the piston while trying to un-do the blade bolt(s).
Check the motors "air filter" while doing this sort of maintenance as a dirty or clogged air filter will affect engine performance and increase fuel consumption of your mower.
If your mower is a "four stroke" model, change the oil at least once a year. When it is tipped over with the spark plug in the air, is a good time to remove the "oil fill" plug and drain oil into an old ice-cream container for recycling.

Mr 51 is wrong, never use compressed air on an air filter, just tap the paper filters or replace them, you can wash the sponge filters, but it's always best to replace them. Diablo is right, we need more info on what is wrong with the mower before we can offer intelligent advice. I'm retired after 25 years in small engine repair.

examine the compression first, no count if it quite is low, positioned a small quantity of oil interior the cylinder and look at it lower back, it it is going up, that's the rings, if not ought to be valves. I even have seen valve seats come unfastened and carry a valve open. that's repaired, if this what it quite is. you will could desire to pull the pinnacle off to verify this. it ought to additionally be a splash bit carbon caught decrease than a valve. it ought to be out of time, does it pull demanding or attempt to jerk the rope out of your hand while attempting to start?? If ought to may well be a timing undertaking.

The same way you repair a car.
You take it apart, and find what is broken.
Replace broken part(s).
