Fantastic answer Steve, I’d like to second what you just said. While I do believe that NAMBLA has the right to say what they do… acting on it is another matter and I don’t really have a problem with the ACLU defending their right to speak. I just wish the ACLU would defend Conservative/Republican groups more often then they do. Whenever I see some story on the internet regarding the ACLU it usually is when it’s defending some far left wing organization.

Freedom of speech would mean very little if we only defended speech that didn't offend anyone.

I certainly agree that NAMBLA is sick, and if any of its members actually practice what they preach I hope they end up in prison forever, but I think that banning the speech of a group just because they're unpopular is a dangerous precedent. After all, by that same token, we could have banned "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or any number of Martin Luther King speeches -- after all, both of those advocated violating the law and promoted an idea (racial equality) that was extraordinarily unpopular.

Instead, how about if the rest of us use OUR power of free speech and speak out against NAMBLA. The ACLU will defend our right to do that as well.

The ACLU defends any group who is outside the mainstream. Their credibility would be shot if they only defended the popular organizations. They must defend the KKK just as well as La Raza.
I personally do not support the ACLU as they are not only an off shoot of the old American communist party, but their objective seems to be to disorganize America and the belief that the popular will of the people shall be the rule off the land.

The ACLU is a non-profit organization. The American Civil Liberties Union's mission is to defend against what they see are threats to the US Constitution. They are a group of lawyers using civil suits to achieve their goals, & are no more accomplises to NAMBLA than Johney Cochran & F. Lee Bailey were to OJ Simpson's crimes.

We hear about the "extreme" clients because it makes good copy for the media. What we don't see in the news are the thousands of everyday, boring cases they enter into supporting everyday people against Govt. intrusion into their lives.

Nobody likes all the causes they represent, including myself. Google ACLU to learn more.

They've never defended the organization's philosophies to my knowledge. Their involvement was strictly to do with constitutional issues, and you should be glad that they did.

The fact that organizations like the ACLU will defend the constitional rights of scumbags like NAMBLA is what guarantees the safety of YOUR constitional rights.

They do NOT defend or support the organization. They defend the organizations right to assemble, as it is a constitutionally protected act. I fail to see why some many otherwise rational people can not understand this. You do not pick and choose what parts of the constitution you want to follow as it suits you. They stand up for those rights, just like if the government tried to take away your guns they would defend your right to that also.

THey don't defend them, they defend all those who want to use the 1st Amendment, even the creeps. Disgusting they may be, they do have that right whilst in the United States of America.

ACLU supports any group that the majority of Americans despise. NAMBLA and Westborough Baptish Church, who hurts insults at soldier's funerals. The ACLU loves it all
