Up north, where our lawns die down in the winter, we use crabgrass preventer in the spring before the crab grass begins to grow. This will allow your regular grass to spread and grow. It is available at any lawn store and most big box stores. Certainly easier than digging.

use crab grass preventer in early spring this will keep the seeds from germinating. Then use crab grass kiler as needed during the summer

Dig it up and put down scotts turf builder. It's hard work but makes your lawn look awesome.
