Anyone who says that Dell is the way to go has never had a problem that required technical assistance to resolve. They sent ALL of their customer (dis)service to India. That means that, unless you speak Hindi, you are going to fight long and hard to get someone who can understand you well enough to help you.
HP rocks. And all of their people speak English.
When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them, and everything is Vista ready.
Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).
Anyway, I bought a complete, new system from stupidcheapcomputers.net with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.
I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.
Good luck!

Dell or Sony
Acer , LG and Toshiba have a better design but they get slow and with lots of bugs just a few months after u buy them.
I ve been using the same Dell for four years with 13 GHz Centrino ,40 GB HDD and 256 MB Ram, and its still faster and more performing than the LG 2.0 Centrino Duo, 1 GB Ram and 80 GB HDD i have bought two months ago

IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads.
I have a 600E. It has been to India, Uganda, St. Martin, and France. It's been dropped, fallen upon, and stuck underneath luggage in the back of an autorickshaw, yet it still works as well as the day I got it. They're nigh indestructible.
If for looks, then a Vaio.
Macs are different breed entirely, since of course there is only one manufacturer and they're generally styled the same. But they are definitely good machines.
