Not much, just £4 worth of petrol and then he realised his stupidity and stopped. He went into the petrol station and told the bloke who said that a bit of petrol won't do any harm. I am sure that I read a couple of years ago that you can cause a lot of damage doing this, and that under no circumstances are you to start the car. Well, hubby's home, it appears no damage done, but it there??

I wouldn't worry about that small amount. I know people who regularly add a bit of petrol to their diesel to improve its performance. The issue with adding large amounts of petrol to a diesel are 2 fold.

1st diesel acts as a lubricant through the fuel pump - petrol does not so you get excessive wear.

2nd and bigger issue is that diesel works via compressing the air and then injecting the fuel. If petrol is used it will self ignite much sooner than diesel resulting in a massive pressure increase that will cause structural damage to the engine

Just completely fill the tank with diesel and you'll be fine

Think your ok as only a fairly small amount of petrol, just keep topping up with diesel as this will bring the balance back correctly and hope no damage has occured, just don't ever mix the other way ie diesel in a petrol.

The small amount of petrol he put in the tank will not affect the engine. A mixture with a large proportion of petrol would have been another story and could have damaged the rings and the glow plugs. Have him top the tank after burning off about a quarter tank to further dilute it.

In modern engines, the premium fuel (often called 'Super' Unleaded or similar) has a higher octane number. You get a slight increase in MPG over the course of the tank and a slight performance increase too. The information about pinking is partially correct, although in modern cars it really isn't an issue. Basically, it works out the same in terms of price over the course of a tank. If I can afford it, I put high octane fuel in my car, if I can't I don't bother. If you don't know anything about cars, the three most important things are: 1) Don't drive your car hard while the engine is warming up. Takes about ten minutes - look at the temp. gauge in your dash. 2) Always buy the most expensive oil you can afford. 3) Always check your oil every month. If you have a modern car (esp. German or Japanese), check the oil regularly and go easy on the clutch, it'll go on for well over 150,000 miles at least.

A low percentage of petrol may not do much harm if it has not started run away reeving , i would keep topping up with diesel at every opportunity if i was you , to bring the volume of the petrol diesel mix up

A gallon of petrol in a diesel car will be fine, If it was the other way round ie diesel in a petrol car then you have problems.
All you are doing is thinning the oil, A diesel engine by design is very very resilient.

you are correct it can cause unrepairable damage (short of a full engine rebuild) how much diesel was in the car?what you would normally need to do is not drive it empty petrol from tank, clean injectors, fuel pump and a few more best thing to do is either phone a garage or a breakdown service but dont drive it till you have got expert advice.

if you add a small amount of petrol by mistake you are supposed to fill the tank to maximum with diesel . this will dilute the petrol and there shouldn't be any lasting damage.

Regardless of what the bloke in the garage said, putting the wrong fuel in a car can do damage which is very expensive to repair!

Phone a garage and ask them for advice on what to do next.
