What makes you seriously think you are following the right path and that they're astray

proud_2ba_american: that isn't really true at all is it. I'm trying to find some middle ground here myself so don't call this question stupid.

My biggest beef is that they are hell bent to kill the golden goose that gives us all our prosperity. Business is what creates all the wealth in this country. Their proposals always intend to harm business by increasing taxes or making it harder to do business.

Other things are:

They oppose every attempt at increasing our domestic oil supply. They oppose nuclear power.
They are weak on national security, and constantly want to appease our enemies rather than confront them.
They seek to give terrorists rights, rather than kill them.
They think the solution to every problem is a government program.
They cannot defend their ideas intellectually, so they usually attack the person who opposes them instead.
They do not actually campaign on things they support, like gay marriage, abortion on demand, but usually only campaign in opposing the Republican position without suggesting their alternative.

I am simply responding to some things. Proud... I totally agree with you, except that I don't think this is a bad question. Birdsnake - I'm v. liberal and have been working since I was 15, steadily. I've never recieved welfare, so I guess I'm confused as to what you're talking about. In my state, if you recieve aid, you literally make nothing. And you can't get enough temporary aid to really do anything - I think the most you can get is $300/month. There is also a strict lifetime limit on the amount of times you can recieve it. Unemployment that you can get is dependant on what you have paid into it - ie, you can access only what you have paid in. The only new taxes I would support would be ones geared at allowing all Americans access to decent health insurance, or something that would allow us more energy independence as a country.

To the guy who wrote this:
1) They are against defending our country.
2) They are hostile towards every religion except radical Islam.
3) They hate the Boy Scouts.
4) They love NAMBLA.
5) They think that all wealth belongs by right to the govt.
6) They think that judges should be allowed & even encouraged to rewrite the constitution.

Um, I'd hate to see what liberals you know. None of these are true. The first one is laughable, the 2nd one is way overblown - I believe you'll find most liberals simply don't want only Christianity to be an acceptable religion, but they simply want everyone to be able to worship in the way they choose as long as that causes harm to no one else -the 3rd one; I don't hate the Boy Scouts, I think it's a bit silly that they believe that having a gay Scoutmaster will make kids gay, as NO scoutmaster has any right to talk about their sex lives in front of the kids. However, I donate to the scouts on a monthly basis. Number 4 - um, no, that's just sick - number. Number 5 is crazy - I wish I had more wealth, lol. I think that taxes since we have to pay, should be fair for all tax brackets and no one should be overtaxed. Number 6 - I believe we as citizens need to do all we can to preserve the freedoms expressed in the Constitution.

Also, I agree that business is a huge part of the country. I love free enterprise, and am a buisness major. I simply think that mom and pop stores/family farms/etc are more worthy of my money than companies that regularly purchase products from outside of the country, pay their workers crap rates with bad insurance, and then profit, profit, profit off Americans. But I also realize that they help drive down prices, etc.

I love guns and shooting, although I do think that background checks are a good idea, as I don't want my kid shot by some idiot who has a record that no one bothered to check. I think that "cool off" periods are strange, anyone hellbent on murdering someone will find a gun somewhere else.

I'm not sure the average Repub can answer this question because if this forum is any indication, most conservatives have NO clue what ideals liberals embrace.
What idiot puts 'Liberals love NAMBLA.?'
Or "liberals just want more money in the govt treasury for their welfare checks.?'
That's close-minded and totally false.

Both sides of the ideological/political spectrum need to be more educated on what the other truly believes in before spouting inane half-truths and generalizations.

By the way, the Constitution has been amended 26 times in our history. Amended means changed. Which could be construed as rewritten.
However, this is the legal and lawful process; a process that Dubya has ignored when making 'interpretations' of the Constitution on what he has authority to do and how he will do it.

It's shockingly obvious that the conservatives here who gave the most passionate answers have never actually met a "liberal."

Instead it seems to me like you're all reacting to made up cartoon characters invented by conservative commentators and political operatives in order to scare you into believing that the country really is divided in half. On the one side you have "us" nice God-fearing conservative Americans who believe in baseball and summertime and apple pie and Mom and Christmas and snowball fights and lemonade and the glories of good, old-fashioned hard work. And on the other side, you have "them" liberal hippie freaks who refuse to work and who want everything handed to them who hate America and coddle terrorists who'll tax all your money away and leave you with nothing and give it to drug dealers and crack addicts who drive around in Cadillacs and have 27 abortions a year and laugh at everything you hold dear.

My friends, you've been had. That cartoon liberal doesn't exist. And, if by some insane reason one or two people think that way, don't you think they're so extreme no one would even listen?

The truth, as with all things, lies in the middle. And sadly, political operatives like karl Rove and his ilk have managed to push this country so far to the right that even reasoned discourse comes off as crazy ranting liberalism. What I find most astonishing is that these operatives have pulled this off despite the glaring and obvious fact that most liberal points of view mirror traditional Christian values, and even though most conservatives call themselves Christian, they still sneer at the word liberal.

Ask yourself a few questions -

- Do you believe that the true measure of a society depends on the quality of its mercy?
- Do you think people deserve a second chance if they make a mistake?
- Do you believe that the punishment should fit the crime, and that vengence really does belong only to the Lord?
- Do you believe that the government should put the interests of people ahead of corporations?
- Do you believe that people have a right to privacy, or does the government belong in our bedrooms?
- Do you believe all people are created equal?
- Do you believe in a government that lies to further its own ends, or one that does what's best for the most number of us?

I suspect, if you answer these questions honestly and free of the relentless noise and lies from people like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Karl Rove, you'll discover how "liberal" your thinking really is.

I don't have any beef against any liberal personally.
I don't like it when people are super PC or ethnic apologists.
I don't like seeing my tax dollars go for social programs that benefit people who will not work (as opposed to disabled people who can not work).
And I have no patience with people who see no need to defend this country from an enemy that they don't understand or comprehend.
The avoidance of those ideas is what lets me know that I am on the right path.

As a general rule, not all to be sure, that many liberals believe either 1 of the 3 following statements, or all of them to a certain degree.

1. The answer to ANY problem is Government, no matter how big or small… Government is ALWAYS the answer.

2. Money solves all problems… if you have a problem… have the Government throw money at it. Problem is… it’s OUR money, Government is fantastic at stealing money from producers and giving it too non-producers.

3. Most businesses are evil… from the smallest Mom and Pop shop, to the largest Corporations in the world… business is evil and must be controlled at all costs.

I don't know if you want a short answer or a long one so I'm gonna give you the middle of the road version.

1) Democrats stand up for people on death row who have committed murder, cut people up into little pieces and flushed them down the toilet, but in the next breath, they will get rid of all of the innocent babies, because murder is a choice.

2) Democrats believe in freedom of speech. As long as it's their speech being heard, because they would hang up the phone before listening to the other side.

3) Democrats believe in freedom of religion, but they don't want people to be able to wear a cross in school.... so unless the religion is Christianity, of course it's fine.

4) Democrats think that the general public should pay half their paycheck to the government so that the government can give it away to the lazy and give the government more control.

5) Democrats think that everyone, no matter how hard or how little they work, should have the same of everything.

So, I think I would like to keep my money and not give half of it to the government like Canada does. I think the government has enough control already, and I already have to struggle to feed my kids. They don't need anymore of my money.

I have seen our public housing situation, and if that is what public health is all about, no thanks.

Ever notice Libs = Left
Conservatives = Right

Any coincidence that Jesus sat at the right hand of the Father? Count me as Right!

By the way, Merry Christmas!!!!

I think my biggest beef against modern political liberals is that they continue to believe that governments create prosperity when in reality, governments are far better at reducing wealth and restricting human achievement.

For the record, I consider myself a Conservative rather than a Republican. I no longer have a "party" affiliation.

The Blind Idealism of the Liberal. They choose the policy that "feels" right instead of working it through. Example Kyoto treaty: It "feels" right help the planet and stop global warming, however if you look at the science behind it, Kyoto would do almost nothing to help Global Warming. I believe that the best estimates show a reduction of temperature of 1/2 of 1 degree in 100 years. The amount of damage to the American economy shifting to that change would be detrimental. So Kyoto is clearly a bad idea for the US. Now put the same clear thinking to the rest of the issues and you will see that the Conservative viewpoint is the right one.
