I think I was bitten by a brown recluse spider on Nov 19,2006. It was red , hard, swollen, dry to the touch but went away in about 2 weeks. Today it is red and itchy and burning, how long will this reaction last? I didn't see what bit me, but it felt like a needle, I was in FL. on vacation. Benadryl seems to help it. I thought it was better, so why did it flair back up like this?

I was bit on my neck by a brown recluse spider in May, 2002 and spent the next week going to the doctor's office every day to track the progress of the venom. They gave me some medicine that had a warning that I shouldn't get pregnant for at least one year after stopping treatment. I do not have a hole where I was bit because, according to the doctor, the hole is caused from scratching the area and ripping out the skin in the process.

You need to see a doctor immediately for medication and evaluation.

Good luck!

If it feels sharp when you press on it, it could be that it wasn't a spider, but something that left a piece of a sticker in your skin...like a piece of thorny matter.

A brown recluse spider bite is pretty serious. To find out if it could be that with your symptoms, call the National Poison Control,
1-800-764-7661, or your doctor/hospital.

Try putting some Ichthammol ointment on it (it's a drawing salve), with a band-aid, at least overnight or over several days if necessary. That might draw some of the poison out. Soak it first in warm epsom salts water. A cloth soaked in that solution would suffice if it is not on a location you can dip into the water. (Both of the above items can be purchased at your pharmacy without a prescription.)

Go to the doctor ASAP. I saw a woman on TV who got bitten by a brown recluse and her body had a really adverse reaction...it got infected and she went from being a beautiful woman to one with a really messed up face! The infection was eating away her skin and left horrible scarring...if that doesn't scare you, I don't know what will! Please get this taken care of by a professional...it could just be taking a long time to heal, but why run the risk of something really bad happening to you by letting it go? Don't self treat anymore- get to a doctor. Best of luck.

The chance of you having been bitten by a spider is much less than of a normal skin infection that has (mostly) resolved. If the inflammation left after about two weeks, and has recurred, the chance of spider bite may be minimally increased. I would check with a physician, to be sure, especially if you have any chronic medical problems (diabetes, immunosuppression)

if it was a brown recluse spider, your are would have rotted off by now, and you would be dead, so don't worry about it being that. Maybe it is an allergic reaction to something other than bite? go to the doctors

You could have some of the venom in little ubbles under the skin; brown recluses are extremely poisonous, so you should seek medical help immediately.
