I've been recording a lot recently, and my microphone just isn't giving me the quality I want. Would I be better off adding pickups to my pretty-good acoustic guitar, or should I just buy a relatively inexpensive electric-acoustic?

In a recording environment I prefer a well mic'ed acoustic guitar. In a live setting an acoustic/electric with a Piezo pick-up under the bridge and feed-back buster in the sound-hole is the way to go.

If you've got a decent guitar with some new strings and a nice microphone (either a condenser or a Shure SM-57), you should be able to get a good recorded sound from it.

The problem with recording with an acoustic electric is that you get absolutely none of the attack of the pick on the strings and many Piezo pick-ups have a definite "quack" sound that is a dead giveaway in a recording.

I use a Line6 Variax to record acoustic. It is virtually indistinguishable from a well mic'ed acoustic.

You should really just get a better microphone. Acoustics sound best when micced.

A nice full range unidirectional Sennheiser will cost you about as much as a guitar and then you'll have it for other recording needs.

Buy an acoustic-electric. Don't tamper with a good, pure acoustic.
