You don't have to... for example:

you can type:

www.cox.com
or cox.com and the "www" is automatically entered not always..

If you have Google Toolbar, you can just type "Cox" it'll take you there..

(Cox is our cable company)

Not every address has these letter. WWW specifies that the page you want is on the world wide web; there are other browser-accessable networks, such as Gopher, which are not located on the www and so require another syntax.

You can also just type in the name without the www and the .com and hit control and enter at the same time and it will auto fill the rest. This only works with .com extension.

Every web address does NOT have www at the beginning.
e.g. https://domainname.com

you don't have to. You should be able to go to yahoo.com or www.yahoo.com. If you have to type the www. to get to a website the person responsible for the dns did does not have the cnames/a-records setup correctly.

You dont always have to.

Infact you'll find many addresses work both with and withou the www. (mine does!)

Some, however do not!

the more information you type in for a site the easier it is for your browser to find the right page . if you just type in a few word then you get all the sites with those words and you have to look through them so the more of the address you have the easier it is to find
