I started learning myself, and I found Bob Marleys, "No Women No Cry" was nice to practice.
It uses 4 chords. Starts with C, then G, then D, then A minor, and repeats.

hendrix? no.
smoke in the water doesnt sound like it but yea it did use fingerpicks.
I can add a few.
Bob Dylan - "Don't think twice, Its allright" (really good one)
Extreme - "More than words"
Kansas - "Dust in the Wind"
Zeppelin - "Babe Im gonna leave You", "Goin to California" (not standard tuning)... you could fingerpick "Your Time is Gonna Come"
James Taylor songs???
Eric Clapton unplugged songs???
I've been inspired by a fellow named Nick Drake to work on my fingerpicking as well. He put out 3 albums before he died, and the last (Pink Moon) was just solo guitar and vocals... so it's good for this type of thing.
All his songs were fingerpicked, and many are fairly challenging by popular music standards. Unfortunately, he uses a bunch of different tunings, but if you want to get adventurous check him out. Tabs can be found here.. http://www.algonet.se/~iguana/DRAKE/NDtabs2.html

it is an unwritten law that if you play guitar, you have to know the beginning riff of Smoke On The Water.
as for suggestions for acoustic: country (old and new) dan seals, willie nelson, and some newer ones such as: toby keith, the wreckers, etc.
