Because I'm a New Yorker, but I plan on moving to CA and working in Los Angeles, but I hate the idea of it. Any of my friends/family who have lived there say that the city started to get to them because everyone's shallow, and vacant (stereotype, i know, but i hear its a stereotype for a reason---because its true, haha)

So, are there any costal cities near by, that are better suited for a NY gal like me? San Diego might be too far-----I hear its about a two hour drive, depending on traffic.

Dear One, Well there is Long Beach, or any of the beach cities. Laguna, Manhattan, Redondo etc. The best place that may be too far for you is Santa Barbara. I love Santa Barbara. I seem to recall that LA has a subway system now, that may be of help to you too. The traffic was simply awful and this was in the seventies and eighties. I have sense relocated to Albuquerque, NM, Madison, WI and Dallas, Texas. So I may not be up on this in LaLa Land. But honey, get on the web and start to check things out. Justine

WOW, we are in the same boat. Sort of. I am also considering moving out of state to either Arizona or Nevada, despite the fact that I have never really been there! My advice is that you plan as far ahead of time as possible. Start saving so that you can travel and check out the areas that you are considering. This will depend on what you are looking for. I'm looking for an area close to a University, so I'm thinking either Tucson or Phoenix. Also, do you want to live in a big area like L.A...or more of a smaller town? If you want that - start with Phoenix. You can always travel to Tempe, and Tucson. I already visited Tucson, it's awesome! It has vast deserts, beautiful valleys and just great weather! It's also really cheap! Oh by the way, did you know that Nevada doesn't have state income tax? That will be bonus for you if you want to put money aside! My advice is Tucson. It has what you basically are looking for - it's not a small town, but not a big city. And depending on where in Tucson you stay, it can be perfect. If Arizona isn't for you, and you want to consider Nevada... think about Henderson. It's close to Las Vegas, it's not a bad city (so I hear). I'm planning to visit Las Vegas and Henderson in a couple weeks to look at the areas myself. I'm also moving this June/July!! So basically. 1. Plan way ahead of time. 2. Dedicate a 1-3 day trip to look at the area, and get a feel of how you'd like it, and drive around to see if it has what you want. 3. Consider where you'd be working (I hope you have jobs ready!). 4. Don't rely on pictures online - you really need to look at the area! 5. Nevada = no state income tax!!! (also highest unemployment rate). 6. Good luck!!

As a nearly native angeleno, I take exception to the idea that we are "shallow." Perhaps the people in "The Industry" are, but they, mercifully are in the minority.

The vast majority of us are ordinary, hardworking folks. Try to find some of those.

On the other hand, with that sort of attitude, we'd rather not have you.
