Yes--there were property owners in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware as well as in Maryland. In the cities, though, renting wasn't uncommon, but for the most part, I'd say that owning one's home wasn't that unusual.

I think, though, most people bought their land first and then built on it.
