Read this article that said, one of them believes that rulership should come by inheritance through a line of descent.
The others believe that it should be done by God. That God should pick the ruler or dictator so it is a theocracy or God rule.
Like Sadam Hussian, was suppose to be picked by God.
The only thing is if they say God chose me and told me so. It is a little hard to prove them wrong.
I think that Iran is Shiites and is helping the Shiites kill Sunni's so they are getting outside help.
The other side Sunni's is what Syria is so they help them. So it is a quagmire. Because they can import help from neighboring country's that add fuel to the fire. They are not openly offering but even Saudi Arabia gets into the mix and so does Egypt.
Supporting there team so to speak. Like protestants helped protestants in Ireland against Catholics and vice versa.

I agree w/the guy above. It's all political and it was caused by the U.S. Personally I'm Sunni and I have Shiite friends and Shiites and Sunnis don't have problems with eachother religiously.

Simplistic Version:

They differ on who the next prophet or Inram, inman? who comes after mohammed and like the Catholics and Protestants fought over power they fight and kill for the true worship of Allah.

These differences in Islamic belief has been reason to elimate. In Iraq the minority Sunni were favoured and now the suppressed Shia are getting revenge.

When the prophet died they each had a different idea on how the new leader should be chosen. Sunni said the best man for the job, Shia said only the prophets relatives. They have been murdering each other over it ever since.
