they want to flip my baby's liber because they think it will help it live longer and it's like something they have done for ever in the family but it's funny because everyone that had it done drinks alchohol that directly affects the liver.

Sounds like you married into the wrong family. Tell them the only flipping that will be done is when you flip them the bird!

I just want to assure you that the liver cannot be flipped physically. The liver has a cultural meaning in the specific area and time, where your relatives live. It sounds like it must have been a very precious part of the body symbolizing good health. That is why you should flip it -symbolically- not physically. It could have a symbolic meaning to secure your baby good health.

When I had my first child, my parents and other people told me not to turn my baby up-side down, but that is wrong! Research has proven that it is indeed very good for the baby to be turned upside down as it stimulates the vestibular system, which is very good in order to secure that your child has a good stabile ground when he/she is challenging her/himself physically. It also helps prevent sickness from driving, sailing, swinging and so on. We grown ups often get dizzy when swinging etc. because we do not challenge our vestibular system. Ideally, you should turn your baby upside down, at least once a day.

All the best,

That is a weird request of them being this day and age. Livers can't move. I would ask your doctor with your hubby and see what they have to say. How long will the baby be upside down for? I read in that What to Expect the first year book that if you hold a baby upside down their retina's can detach! SO I wouldn't do it for that reason alone. Tell them no and stand your ground.

It's a superstition not occult. I would simply ignore them. Also, and since you have already told them no and won't listen. Insist upon it and refuse to take any advice. I would start shutting them out and if they wonder why simply explain that because they will not leave you alone about your and the child's lives and respect your wishes to stop talking about flipping the baby; you have taken it upon yourself and will remove yourselves. Your husband might have an issue with this but hopefully he will understand why you are doing it.

Holding a baby upside down can be dangerous, especially if there is any shaking or bouncing involved. A baby's blood vessels in his/her brain are much more delicate than an adult's, and when the blood rushes to his/her head from being held upside down, if you aren't careful, his/her blood vessels can burst.
This is rare, but wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? (Especially when it's involving your child's health/possibly even life...)
Just tell your in-laws that you are not comfortable with it, and your doctor has told you that it is unnecessary and possibly harmful (as (s)he will tell you if/when you ask).

its an old wives tell.... why would anyone want to left a babies liver anyways..... Im pretty sure that a liver is unflippable, so actually holding the baby upside down is harmless....I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of thinking they are right.

First, find out why they want to flip the baby's liver.

Second, tell them no, because that could hurt the baby.

That's absurd and quite possibly dangerous.

Under no circumstances should you allow this.
