PAST
The Trade Dollar was minted 1873-1885 with Lady Liberty seated with an olive branch towards the west. It was the only "full body" dollar, with the rest merely showing heads. ;) Interestingly, the Trade Dollar was only printed in response to other Western powers in Asia circulating large, crown size silver coins like Great Britain, Spain, and France. Trade Dollars were not circulated in the United States but were legal tender.
The Morgan Dollar had personification of "Peace" in 1878-1904 and then in the first half of 1921.
The "Peace" face was on the dollar when it was minted 1921-28 and 1934-35 abd again in 1964.
Eisenhower appeared on the dollar coin minted between 1971 through 1978.
The Susan B Anthony coin was minted 1979-1981 and also in 1999.

PRESENT
Currently (2000-present) Sacagawea graces the face of the 'golden' dollar coin.

FUTURE
Beginning in 2007, the US will mint dollar coins, similar in size and color to Sacagawea, to create renewed interest in the coin like that seen in the 50 state quarters program.
Rather than the states, the focus will now be on US Presidents. Though, printing of the Sac dollars aren't going to end. About two-thirds of the dollars minted will be the US presidents coinage and the rest Sacagawea.

There are many different images on silver dollars. They're typically identified by the images on them. Recent mintings include Sacagawea, Susan B Anthony, and Dwight Eisenhower. Lincoln has never appeared on a US dollar coin to my knowledge.

Recent "silver" dollars have Liberty, Eisenhower or Sacajawea. Starting next year, they will have the Presidents, 4 per year.

The last true "silver" dollars had "Liberty" on the obverse and the American Eagle on the reverse.
