The characterization indicates significant progress over the past 24 hours between the Red Sox, who Nov. 14 earned exclusive negotiating rights to the 26-year-old Matsuzaka with a record posting bid of $51.1 million, and agent Scott Boras.

Looks like you copied it straight from someones column. Watch out for that plagiarism charge. To answer your question, no! I don't know anyone in any occupation that is worth $51M. After all it's baseball of pete sakes! It's not like finding a cure for cancer, it's freakin' baseball!!

I just heard on th Dan Patrick show that he has signed with the Red Sox for $66 Million over 6 years. So if you add in the $51.1 they payed just to negotiate that works out to roughly $19.5 million per year. No pitcher is worth that much, especially when he has never thrown a pitch in the Major's. Boston made a bad decision and I don't think it will pan out, they are just trying to catch the Yank's in payroll.

Is A-rod worth 252 million for 10 years? Is Jeter worth 189 million for 10 years? No way and I'm a Yankee fan. The salaries of sports figures have become so inflated that they will never reflect a players true worth. Meche at 55 million? What did he do to get that contract? He was a mediocre pitcher at best but in today's market he's worth that kind of money.
Our society, unfortunately puts more emphasis on Hero's than educators, researchers and public safety.
Go figure.

Well it depends on how good he is. If he is as good as they predicted(doubt it) then yes he is worth it because they predict he will be one of the best pitchers ever and a Great Pitcher under 30 that is not signed to a long deal is very hard to come by.

Is anyone worth $51m for playing a game? Not really, but you have to look at it in context. This is a capitalist society, and these guys possess skills that very few of us have, and that many of us are willing to pay to see on display. So I agree with Mick, but we have to suspend our thoughts about true worth when it comes to sports contracts.

As for Matsuzaka, I think he'll be worth it if the Sox stick to their guns and take the $51m posting into consideration for any contract with him. Giving him $50m for six years isn't bad, but I think it's going overboard to look in the $10-12m range, as that would put the "real" value at about $20m per season.

ESPN is saying that the deal is not going to go through. I can't believe the money the Sox have invested in him.
