I think it's ATI. They both make good graphics cards, though. I think Nvidia just took longer to rise to greatness than ATI. They're probably very comparable.

Here's a virtual matchup between cards from ATI and Nvidia. You could probably find more of these on the web.

That was from August of this year. I wouldn't say that one card represents each maker as a whole, but it's somewhat informative.

from a preference point. I had lots of trouble with my ATI, still dont know it might have been my fault but still it would shut off during games of Warcraft III, read on some forums and quite a few other people were having the same trouble, after patching i think it was 3 times to "fix it" it was working fine but i still wanted a better video card so i got an Nvidia this time, no complaints for 1.5 years so prefer Nvidia but both make high quality Video cards.

Right now Nvidia holds the upper hand with their 8800 series cards, and DX10. In my opinion the drivers for Nvidia are easier to deal with than ATI, and more games are optimized for nvidia chipsets.

i recommend ati for advanced users as the catylyst control center can be a bit confusing for the beginner, and nvidia for someone buying their 1st graphic card as the nvidia control panel is alot easier to use
in my opinion nvidia are slightly better than a.t.i,this is due to 1)they have unified drivers which makes it easier to locate new drives and 2)their cards are much more stable than the ati g.p.u,s(graphic processor units),and nvidia have much more of a selection of cards, including their new 8 series cards which are excellent.
stick with nvidia

If you are using Linux, nVidia wins hands down. The ATI drivers do not support the new cards and perform very poorly.

They are both excellent. I've got an Nvidia but I've used ATI and they've both served me well.

nvidia for innovation, ati for raw performance and quality.

I myself like nvidia is what I am currently using. Just depends on what needs your needs.
