Wether lightning is part of thunder or not, I"ve always believed them to be two different things. Lightning and thunder have their own names. I believe that it's to distinguish the difference between light and sound. At times, the light is seen first (lightng). This is the impact of electricity. Next, is the sound of that impact (thunder). In kick-boxing, a forward kick consist of raising your leg, tucking it back into a chamber, flexing it out, pulling it back, and setting your leg down. All of these steps are caled a kick like it's one motion. Lightning and thunder might be the same also with two parts. Each part of the kick has a name.

the lightning comes first and every five seconds you don't hear thunder means the strike was one mile away, or every three second you don't hear thunder the strike was one kilometer away more than fifty seconds thunder won't be heard, as sound only carries for about ten miles or so. Sound carries better over water, so if you're on the water, you will hear thunder after a count of fifty seconds up to seventy-five seconds (fifteen miles)

Don't know about you but I have never seen thunder but have heard it many times. I see the lightening and then will hear the thunder as sound travels a lot slower than light.

You see lightening and hear thunder. Light waves travel faster than sound waves, thus, you see lightening first, then hear the thunder later.

We can't see thunder.
We see lightning first because light travels faster than sound.
Thunder is the air rapidly expanding due to the extreme heat of lightning.

everyone who says "you mean we see lightning" don't listen to them...yes its called lightning but really thunder is lightning. a lightning (thunder) bolt flashes then you hear the booming sound it makes after you see it because sound travels slowly.

Because light travels at 186,000 miles per second and sound only travels 1 mile in 5 seconds.
