There are a number of reasons for losing hair that range from 'self-inflicted' - like the wrong shampoo, the chemicals in a hair dye, the roots being tugged too hard when styling... or it could be something genetic like male pattern baldness (yes it can happen to women too!) or thyroid problems .... or it could be to do with the side effects of medication that's being taken - the same medication for a long time? a recent change in medication? or it could be to do with a situation that's causing long term stress - the job? the co-workers? bullying? depression? post traumatic stress? a car accident? a recent severe shock? (sometimes these things can take a while to have an effect, sometimes there is a delay in the effect showing).... your friend really needs to get herself checked out with her doctor to at least eliminate immediate medical/health problems ... then she may need to sit down and review her life in general to see which areas she hasn't been happy with for a while/long time .... she may need to reveiw and re-evaluate her life and her lifestyle..... perhaps it's her diet .....
I suffered alopecia totalis after car crash in mid- 1989 - the alopecia didn't take effect until late 1989/early 1990 - I was told nothing could be done - except a return appointment in two years for a new prescription for a wig! .... unhappy with this response and prognosis I sat myself down and reviewed my life, my lifestyle and assessed that things had worked fine until the RTA - then they didn't work fine - therefore 'something' knocked them out of kilt ... I needed to work out how to 'knock it back in' .... I turned to reviewing and updating my vitamin and mineral intake, together with the lifestyle and diet I had ... two years later my hair grew back thicker and better than before ... the only difference was much of my very dark brunette colour didn't ... but hey! who cared so long as I had hair!

I am sure blow drying too much could affect, but there could be other reasons too.
I know that stress can be a factor, a bad diet could also affect. Then there is always a possibility that she is ill. I read somewhere that one of the symptoms for an inactive thyroid gland is hair loss.
If her hair is long and thick it might just be that her hair loss is more visible than with other people. We all lose about 200 hairs everyday - that is just normal.

Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons such as improper nutrition, the intake of certain medications, excessive exposure to the sun, bleaching and excessive blow drying.
If the scalp hair is weak or thin, or if there is partial or complete hair loss, this is a result of nothing more than a shortage of the basic amino acid "building blocks" our bodies need to produce normal growth. Obviously, if these essential amino acids are deficient, they become weak, falls out, and fails to regenerate normally.
You could go to your local chemist (Pharmacy) and ask for Amino Acid supplements or talk to them and ask what vitamin they maybe lacking and get this for her.
I do know that Vitamin D plays apart in Hair reproduction and growth.

Is there any chance she could be pulling it out herself? There's a condition called trichotillomania which is a form of obsessive compulsive disorder. Sufferers repeatedly pull out strands of the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair. I've seen pictures in magazines before of people who have done this and they have bald patches in their hair. Could you convince her to see a doctor? I strongly doubt that blowdrying would make her lose her hair.

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.
Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.
Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.

it could be alopecia or female paten baldness it does happen stress can add greatly to hair loss ....you know if shes hiding something from you only she knows the truth and if shes not willing to tell you that is her perogative unfortunatly at least she has a great friend who is there to listen when shes ready...bless ya
