It all depends on what you've been used to hearing. Sorry, that's the only explanation I have.

Our brains are all hard wired a little differently.

Let me guess...you're a jazz player? Jazz solos are lost on 98% of the population. I remember a gig where we played a jazz version of "Amazing Grace". It sounded fabulous. Afterwards, someone came up and said we "hit some wrong notes"! Studies have shown the general population like major/minor keys. That is why pop music does so well.

Also, it depends on your definition of "popular music". There will always be a general group of people who will buy and listen to what the record companies want them to hear. What was popular 20 years ago...30...40? Do you find value in that? This year I've rediscovered some of the roots of popular music: Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr., Carl Perkins, just to name a few. Simple stuff, but effective and just damn good.

Still, when I get an itch, I'll scratch it with something more challenging. Besides, I like it with my favorite bands not being popular...easier to get tickets for them.

Why should they? That's what you and I are here for! I'm a musician/songwriter. Most of my life is spent immersed in music. If everyone spent their lives the way I spend mine we'd all be living in caves, 'cause nothing else would exist! I'm glad the people who made my car aren't as "serious" about music as I am, or they'd be musicians, too, and nobody would have made my car! Same for the people who made my computer (who probably cannot understand why I'm not as serious about computer science as they are)... Or the people who make the 30 synthesizers in my studio... Or the people who made my house, the chair I'm sitting in... My doctor, veterinarian, grocer... What if they all were "hung up" on music like us? Cherish your special gift, 'cause that's what it is. Only a few people obsess over music like us. And ain't that GREAT?!?!?!?
