First thing to do is get a night light or something that you have to plug into an outlet & check to see if you have power going to the disposal. If not check the switch & breaker, If you do have power at the outlet, press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Also check to see if there is a hole that is hex shaped for an allen wrench, but that size allen wrench is not big enough to give you the leverage you need to break it free. You local hardware store sell the disposal wrench for about $5.00. If there is no hex hole, then you have to use a WOODEN broom handle or dowel rod. To replace the disposal is very simple. All you need is a flat screw driver, hammer, & 6" adjustable wrench & channel loc pliers. If yo have a dishwasher YOU HAVE TO KNOCK OUT THE PLUG IN THE HOSE NIPPLE on the disposal. OTHERWISE YOU DISHWASHER WILL NOT DRAIN!!!!!!! Also make sur you replace your disposal with the same brand disposal you have now or you will have to replace the sink mounting ring in you sink & that can be a pain in the butt if you have never replaced a disposal before. As for the smell pour bleach or vinager in the sink.

I don't know if this will help with your garbage disposal. But a lady on another forum talked about squeezeing the juice of a lemon into her dishwasher the putting the lemon itself in the silverware rack with the lid shut. Then she added a half cup of baking soda and ran it through a rinse cycle.
Perhaps running lemon juice and baking soda through your disposal would help?
Good luck!

Fruit rinds and let it run a bit. Once in a while you could put in some baking soda and then some vinegar after and it will help get any buildup of grease out of it and then too, put some egg shells through from time to time. Keep some fruit rinds like lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit around and fresh and run them through and it will be like heaven with the sweet smells you get.

I purchased this bag of Garbage Disposal Magic Pellets that you can put down in the garbage disposal to clean and freshen it. The pellets foam up and really clean the disposal quite nicely. Pick up a bag at Lowe's for around $5 bucks.
Good luck!

here's what i do, fill my coffee pot 1/3 white vinegar, 2/3 water then run it thru the coffee maker. while that's brewing take the old box of baking soda out of the fridge and put a new one in. cut open the top of the box and pour 1/2 of it in the disposer, pour the other half in the bathroom sink drain. by now the brew is done pour 1/2 of it down the disposer, and the other half down the bathroom sink. run another pot of water thru the coffee maker to rinse it. now the coffee maker is clean and the coffee will taste great, the disposer is clean, and the bathroom sink will drain better. when the wife gets home i brew her a nice tasting pot of coffee!

Use lemon slices, the citrus in lemons breaks down the crud in the disposal and leaves it smelling like lemons.

I use a baby food jar filled with lemon juice and lots of ice. As the glass is broken up it sharpens the blades a bit and helps grind out all the muck that is stuck between the blades. The lemon juice does a good job cutting the bad odor.

Run it and pour bleach. Then let it sit. Come back run water through it and throw in some lemons (cut in halves or fourths.)
